Job Description

Hollins University is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Special Advisor on Inclusivity and Diversity.

Reporting directly to the President, and serving on her/his Cabinet, the special advisor will have broad responsibility for building internal capacity to address issues of inclusivity and diversity at the university. Functioning as an expert resource for the Hollins community, the advisor will have oversight of and coordinate all inclusivity and diversity activities and programs.

The Special Advisor on Inclusivity and Diversity will advise the President and Cabinet on successful inclusivity and diversity models from other institutions of higher education across the country, provide training to Hollins’ senior leadership team and administrators and staff involved in inclusivity and diversity efforts, and work closely with faculty and other employees involved in these efforts. He/she will guide the campus community in developing formats for topical dialogues which align with national and regional trends and discussions, and interact with national groups focusing on the same issues.

The special advisor will establish milestones/assessments to define, measure, and analyze incremental improvements to both the campus climate and a growing capacity to sustain a healthy climate of inclusivity. He/she will then develop, lead, and manage (1) an educational program series to include guest speakers, panels, and other events and (2) a series of faculty training opportunities focused on the pedagogy of inclusivity and cultural competency. Additionally, the special advisor will oversee a sustained dialogue program for students, allowing them to participate in and facilitate discussions to address inclusivity and diversity, and enhancing their capacity to address difficult peer-to-peer issues. He/she will also oversee a sustained inclusivity and diversity dialogue program for faculty and staff and blended groups. The special advisor will have a part-time administrative assistant to support him/her.

Successful applicants must have a master’s degree in a related field; minimum of five years of related experience in an academic or corporate setting; fluency in principles and language of inclusivity and diversity; evidence of progressively responsible administrative leadership experience; proficiency with Microsoft Office; demonstrated project management skills; and excellent communication, interpersonal, and multitasking skills. Candidates must also have abilities to make effective presentations to small and large groups; communicate and work effectively and build strong, collaborative relationships with all levels of faculty, staff, and students; meet objectives and deadlines; work independently, as well as on a team; and manage confidential and sensitive matters. Candidates with experience in a single-sex, residential, liberal arts higher education institution are preferred.

Hollins is an independent, liberal arts university in Roanoke, Virginia offering undergraduate education for women, selected graduate programs for men and women, and community outreach initiatives. Founded in 1842 as Virginia’s oldest chartered women’s college, Hollins is best known for its creative writing program, one of the oldest study-abroad programs in the country, and extensive internship opportunities.

Hollins University is an equal opportunity employer. Hollins values diversity in its community, and strongly encourages applications from members of underrepresented populations.
