Pierce College District is seeking nominations and applications for the inaugural position of Executive Officer for Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EOEDI).

Position Summary:
Reporting to the Chancellor and serving on the Executive Team, the EOEDI will be a key district leader charged with leading and coordinating the implementation of district wide prioritization in equity, diversity and inclusion. The EOEDI will demonstrate Pierce College’s commitment to E,D&I through building the District’s competency in E,D&I and increasing capacity for underrepresented groups.

The EOEDI will be responsible for editing, updating, implementing, and tracking our recently-developed equity, diversity and inclusion plan. The plan’s goal is to improve the District’s capacity and capability around equity, diversity and inclusion and cultural competency. At the outset the EOEDI will be tasked with building an infrastructure for Pierce’s E,D&I operation. Once this foundation is set up, the position’s main areas of focus will be diverse talent acquisition and development, an inclusive culturally competent campus and workplace culture, and instructional and educational support.

Essential Functions:
Strategic Leadership & Vision:
In cooperation with Executive Team, and the District’s committees, councils, and Institutional Effectiveness and Research team, establishes benchmarks and assesses the progress of the equity, diversity and inclusion plan.
Provides status reports, as required, and annual reports to Chancellor, working closely with relevant district offices in use of surveys, benchmarking, data, and assessment.

Inventories existing E,D&I-related programs, policies, and initiatives; advises on maximizing impact; provides guidance on next steps and monitors and evaluates policies regarding E,D&I issues for the District.
Identifies and promotes innovative strategies that lead to an enhanced and sustainable E,D&I competency as reflected within the District, its processes, and its policies.

In conjunction with Human Resources, collaborates with divisions and departments, to 1) improve recruitment and retention of prospective students, faculty, administrators, and staff from underrepresented groups, 2) enhance inclusion into the overall campus and workplace, and 3) infuse multiculturalism in classes and through curriculum.
Contributes to long- and short-range planning and implements district-wide strategies and initiatives.

Equity, Diversity & Inclusion:
Promotes a culture of inclusion, transparency, and full participation of all constituents in discussions regarding E,D&I.
Establishes and maintains relationships with historically underrepresented (non-majority) community, regional, and national organizations as well as with area institutions of learning.

Crafts cohesive messaging around E,D&I, clarifying the District’s intentions, goals, and desired outcomes.
Develops clear pathways for affinity and employee resource groups on issues of engagement and mentoring to develop talent.

Directs attention to E,D&I needs on campus and responds appropriately through well-planned efforts in consultation with the Executive team.

Organizational Leadership:
Represents the District in local, state, regional, and national functions, as appropriate.
Counsels the Chancellor and other leaders on making thoughtful and strategic decisions that demonstrate Pierce’s E,D&I commitment.

Advocates for macro-level diversity issues affecting Pierce, while also providing support and resources to inform and empower District students and employees to advocate for E,D&I in their respective areas.
Uses professional networks to identify resources the District may be able to draw from to enhance Pierce’s E,D&I operation.

Supervision and Administration:

  • Supervises and provides strategic leadership to the Office of Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (OEDI).
  • Develops, recommends, and administers a budget for the OEDI.
  • Works as a key member of District’s shared governance in matters of E,D&I.
  • Collaborates with those responsible for trainings, programs, and services to foster more cohesive and efficient delivery by providing subject matter expertise and integrating internal talent’s expertise.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Title IX:
Assists the District Title IX Coordinator in resolving complaints of sexual misconduct, sexual harassment, gender-related violence (including stalking and intimate partner violence), protected class discrimination and harassment involving members of the Pierce College community or visitors.
As a lead investigator for assigned complaints, acts as a neutral party in the investigation and provides a detailed, unbiased report regarding the findings of the investigation.
May also develop, coordinate, and provide related training to employees and students.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization.
  • Relevant professional E,D&I experience.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence.
  • Experience in designing and leading efforts relating to institutional access, diversity, inclusion, multiculturalism, and education and employment equity; demonstrated expertise around diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Record of working collaboratively with academic and administrative colleagues at all levels in a large, complex institution, as well as with diverse external communities, to facilitate positive and collaborative processes and initiatives.
  • Attributes and Characteristics:
    Ability to understand and respond to the culture of a campus.
  • Strategic forward-thinker with the ability to be transformative and tactical while paying close attention to delivering tangible results.
  • Ability to champion a common vision of the District’s commitment to E,D&I that can be shared internally and externally.
    In-depth understanding of the nature of organizational behavior and change.
  • Ability to lead and manage institutional change initiatives; recognize when there is a need for change; demonstrate adaptability; successfully manage and implement complex organizational change.
  • Provide leadership in accordance with the mission, vision, values, and goals established by the district, including fostering a service philosophy with a commitment to accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to work collaboratively and be a team-oriented leader, work effectively across organizational lines and create and nurture a safe, bias-free working environment which engenders respect for all individuals and for their differences.
  • Ability to communicate with and advocate for people from all backgrounds.
  • Ability to think critically, evaluate information, and implement timely decisions and recommendations that anticipate the cost benefits, risks and organizational impact on advancing E,D&I goals.
  • Excellent managerial and administrative leadership skills including the ability to tie budget and revenue goals to diversity and institutional goals.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills including the ability to analyze and explain complex information in a manner that is understandable to a broad audience; listens accurately and actively.

Terms of Employment:

This is a full time administrative exempt district position. Evening and weekends will occasionally be required. Frequent travel back and forth between campuses will occur. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. A competitive benefits package is included.
